HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB 2003-10-16 Minutes CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES October 16, 2003 CALLED TO ORDER: APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Polly Brinkley, Mary Shilcutt, Kay Schmidt, Avis Crisp, Lynn Waller, (Absent: Janet Ball, Eva Pereira, Kathy Antropik) Steve Brown, Library Director Brenda Lewis, Administrative Secretary Chair Mary Shilcutt at 7:05 p.m. Minutes of September 18, 2003 were approved as written. BOARD PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT - Steve Brown Carpet replacement for the library is scheduled for this fiscal year. Staff is preparing to order new patron cards. The city IS department will replace most library computers in November. Innovative, the library's online catalog, will be upgraded at this time. The Fort Worth Public Library is considering joining The Answer Zone. REPORT ON GRANT PROJECTS OF FISCAL YEAR 2003 - Steve Brown With a $20,000 LSTA Grant to enhance the Spanish language collection, additional shelving has been added to hold the approximately 12,000 new titles for both children and adult Spanish speaking customers. The library collection now has over 1,000 digitized historical images thanks to the $10,000 from the TexTreasures Digitization Grant for the N.E.T. Image project. ELECTION OF OFFICERS FY 2003104 On nominations made and seconded, Janet Ball (pending acceptance) and Lynn Waller was elected Chair and Vice Chair respectively of the NRH Library Board FY2003/04. Eva Pereira (pending acceptance) will continue as the lay representative to the North Texas Regional Library System. ROAD CONSTRUCTION UPDATE - Steve Brown The current work on the approaches to Rufe Snow/Loop 820 is expected to take 4-6 weeks, followed by the reopening of the west entrance to the library. The contractor has one year to finish bridge construction with a commitment to keeping four lanes open at all times. RESULTS OF HENNEN'S AMERICAN PUBLIC LIBRARY RATINGS - Steve Brown With a power point presentation, Mr. Brown reviewed the factors of the Hennen's American Public Library Rating index that ranked over 9,000 public libraries. With a composite score of 719, NRHPL ranks 3rd in the state among the 26 libraries serving 50,000-100,000 population. PROJECTS FOR INCLUSION IN LOAN STAR LIBRARIES GRANT FY2004 - Steve Brown Shelving, wireless access, computer stands, and additional DVDs were among the items presented to the board for inclusion in the Loan Star Libraries Projects FY2004. Following discussion, the board concurred with Mr. Brown's suggestions for the grant requests. The next meeting was scheduled for November 20, 2003.
