STAFF PRESENT: CALLED TO ORDER: APPROVAL OF MINUTES: LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT - Steve Brown Library use has continued at a fast pace in March, despite the effects of the school's spring break. Staff is booking performers and finalizing plans for the Children's Summer Reading Club beginning in May. The workstations at the circulation desk have been experiencing a "lock-up" problem in the afternoon resulting in longer times for patrons to check out. The city's computer department suspects this to be a network problem and are working to resolve the situation. City Council approved the new employee pay plan with increases retroactive to January for police and fire and March for civil service and appointed staff. No significant changes are expected for budget requests for the upcoming year. With flat revenue projections, departments are preparing for cuts if the economy does not improve. Five NRHPL library staff will attend the Texas Library Association conference in Houston the first week of April. Citicable is planning a new series of features on city operations; the Library will be featured in its first segment. Filming is scheduled to begin this week. The March MasterWorks performance was the best-attended concert in the now two-year-old series. DISCUSS SCHEDULING OF LIBRARY USED BOOK SALE - Steve Brown Used book donations have been unusually slow coming in this year. Therefore, we do not have enough books for our usual spring book sale. We will consider a sale in the fall if more donations come in through the summer. DISCUSSION REGARDING LIBRARY FACILITIES PLANNING - Steve Brown The major news this month is that conditions appear favorable to move ahead with planning for a new library. City Council received an extensive briefing at the pre-council session on March 13. Mr. Brown presented a Power Point update and reviewed the TIF #2 and Library Plan for the Home Town area. If economic conditions permit, the new library could be ready to open in FY 2005/6. The next regular meeting was scheduled for April 17, 2003. This meeting adjourned at 8 p.m. Brenda Lewis Approved¡",I._I_ _._~ ~ <: /.1 !i ' Date: ~ Board Chair: ~ <::;).J¡.y~ .
