APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT - Steve Brown
Circulation for October was 31 % higher than in October 2000. The large increase may be tied to
worries about the economy, but the overall trend is very positive.
The Library will be adding a Spanish language interface for the Innovative library online catalog.
Dates for the 2002 MasterWorks programs have been scheduled with performers to be announced
later.
In addition to the recent resignation of the technical services supervisor, we will now lose one of the
two technical service clerks. We will interview next week for the currently available page
position.
The proposal to rescind the NRHPL non-residency fee is on the pre-council agenda for the
November 12 meeting.
Board memberships in the Texas Library Association will be renewed this month.
Added children's book shelving and security cameras are suggestions for the Texas Lone Star
Library funding.
Training is scheduled for mid-November for the virtual reference project with the service to begin in
January.
The city annual board and commission banquet is scheduled for Thursday, November 15.
DISCUSSION OF STAFF APPRECIATION EVENT
Following discussion board members decided to host a library staff appreciation luncheon in the
library board room on Wednesday, December 12, at 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Mary Shilcutt will coordinate.
BRIEFING ON NRH BUDGET CONTINGENCY PLAN
Mr. Brown discussed the city's budget contingency plan. Among the immediate actions planned are
a freeze on all new hire and vacant positions until January; reduce travel and training, cut some
capital purchases and delay others. Department directors will review, monitor, and control
expenditures.
DEMONSTRATION OF NEW CATALOG FEATURES
Mr. Brown demonstrated a new feature to the Library's online catalog. Catalog records for recent
additions will offer links to much more information about the book, including book jacket images, book
reviews, summaries, table of contents, and in some cases actual excerpts from the book.
The meeting for December was cancelled. The next scheduled board meeting will be January 17,
2002. This meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m.
