APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR STEVE BROWN
Library circulation has continued strong through February, with a lot of activity in the afternoons and evenings.
Most of the growth has been in renewals.
Five staff members will be attending the Texas Library Association's annual conference in San Antonio at the
end of March.
Classical Violinist William Scobie entertained library patrons on Tuesday, March 13. This was the second
program of the MasterWorks 2001 series.
Plans are underway for a spring book sale on Saturday, April 21. A dozen or so Richland High students in
need of a community service project will assist staff.
An evening children's and adult story time and a native plant program are among the special events to
celebrate National Library Week the first week of April.
The Adult Services staff reported that a patron would like to donate his personal books to our recently begun
Spanish collection.
BRIEFING ON TXDOT HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION PLANS - Steve Brown
City staff is meeting with Texas Department of Transportation representatives to study the future plans for this
area. The first phase will be the reconstruction of the Rufe Snow Bridge with contract bids in September and
construction planned for January 2002. The Loop 820 expansion will include more lanes each way, a HOV
lane and turnaround lanes. This means that the access lane will be within 20-30 feet of the children's window
area and come closer towards the recreation center. Although the access road entry will remain, the complex
will lose parking. In addition to the library/recreation complex, this project will affect the tennis center and city
hall. City officials will be meeting to try to work with TxDot on details. Mr. Brown will update the Board as
news is available.
DEMONSTRATION OF ONLINE VIRTUAL REFERENCE - Steve Brown
The Library received City Council approval to submit the Online Reference Project grant proposal in
cooperation with Irving and Carrollton, and the funding request was submitted on March 1. The project has
already generated some favorable publicity and several other libraries have asked to participate in the project.
Mr. Brown connected to a similar California virtual interactive project that went online in the last several
weeks. The service allows a patron to contact a reference librarian via the Internet and discuss their
information needs interactively. The program gives the librarian the power to link the library computer to the
user's computer and guide the user to the information they seek.
The next scheduled meeting will be April 19. Meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
