STAFF PRESENT: CALLED TO ORDER: APPROVAL OF MINUTES: REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR STEVE BROWN The statistics for the first three months of the fiscal year reflected increases with a busier December than expected. With the opening of Fort Worth's Summer Glen Branch, some of our Fort Worth patrons will now be able to check out from their new neighborhood library. Reference Librarian Kerry McGeath has left to join the Euless Library in an administrative position; Tammi Trull has assumed his duties at the reference desk. The Library recently successfully hosted a harp duo with flute and guitar as part of the Masterworks series. Improved lighting projects are planned for the children's theater, the front entrance, and the south wall study area. We had hoped to have the Library Coffee Bar available to patrons by now. Due to the incorrect and incomplete equipment delivery, it may be another month. The TCC Library Skills Class for Seniors is scheduled again this year for ten weeks beginning at the end of January. Mr. Brown reviewed and discussed with the board a handout that included information on the current and future plans of patron web access to library services. Access to licensed electronic databases, interlibrary loan requests placed from home, interactive reference service, and e-books are patron services planned for the future. ELECTION OF OFFICERS FY2001 Following nominations and election by acclamation, Avis Crisp agreed to serve as Library Board Chair and Janet Ball as Vice Chair FY2001. DISCUSSION OF PROPOSED LIBRARY SERVICES AND TECHNOLOGY ACT GRANT APPLICATION Staff is currently working on a LSTA $75,000 grant proposal funded by the state with federal money. This would be a cooperative project with Irving Public Library and Carrollton Public Library to introduce online interactive virtual reference service. As a preliminary step, we have recently begun offering an e-mail reference service. The application will be submitted in early March and, if funded, would be a pilot program with the eventual participation of area libraries. DISCUSSION OF IMPACT OF CHILDREN'S INTERNET PROTECTION ACT As NRHPL does not receive funding/discounts under the parameters of this act, NRHPL does not have to comply with these regulations. Mr. Brown reviewed the library's existing Internet Access policy with the board. He stated this policy seems to work well. The Reference Desk staff uses an automated system of logging in and out patrons on the public computers. Ten computers are available at the current time for the public, with two to be added in the children's department shortly. The children's staff is reviewing filtering options for these additional terminals. Mr. Brown reminded members the area tour of libraries will leave here at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 20. The next scheduled meeting will be February 15. Meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m. Brenda Lewis Approved: Date: ~ - /5.... J-n¡ Board Chair: ~ ~
