HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB 2000-10-19 Minutes CITY OF NORTH RICHLAND HILLS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES October 19, 2000 BOARD PRESENT: Janet Ball, Mary Shillcutt, Kay Schmidt, Avis Crisp, Lynn Waller, Eva Pereira, William Merrill (Absent: Polly Brinkley) Steve Brown, Library Director Brenda Lewis, Administrative Secretary Chair Lynn Waller at 7 p.m. Minutes of September 21,2000 were approved as written. STAFF PRESENT: CALLED TO ORDER: APPROVAL OF MINUTES: REPORT OF LIBRARY DIRECTOR STEVE BROWN September closed out a record fiscal year with 430,420 loans, nearly 47,000 more than fiscal year 1999. Several surveillance cameras have been installed in the video and music sections as a deterrent to theft. Signage will be posted to warn patrons that thefts will be prosecuted. We have begun working to implement the $80,525 Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund grant by placing orders for equipment and installing new data cables throughout the Library. Over the next few months, the city's human resources department will be considering upgrade reclassifications of several library positions. Adult Services Librarian Louanne Noel recently attended an international book fair in Monterrey, Mexico. She met with several Spanish booksellers, and she will be working to improve and expand our small Spanish collection. The Texas Book Fair will be held in Austin on November 10th, 11th, and 12th. TLA Legislative Day in Austin is scheduled for February 7th. Mr. Brown encouraged members to attend if their schedules allow. REVIEW OF REVISED PLANS FOR REORGANIZING THE LlBRARY'S COLLECTIONS Mr. Brown reviewed the plans for two additional rows of shelving for the adult fiction area. When the shelves are installed several collections will be relocated to allow for expansion. This much-needed extra space will provide for approximately 13,000 new books. DISCUSS PLANS FOR LIBRARY VISITS Mr. Brown discussed with members several proposals for visiting DFW libraries in preparation for planning the new NRH library. Following review of Mr. Brown's proposals, the Board decided to visit Piano's Harrington Library, Irving Library, and the Flower Mound Library. The tour was scheduled for Saturday, November 18th.
